Update: position closed!

We are looking to for an agricultural manager to help maintain and develop the 8500 square meters of garden plots on the farm at Casa Caponetti, as well as helping to develop our beekeeping program.  The ideal candidate will have knowledge and experience in a wide range of organic growing methods, and will be able to implement and monitor these methods throughout the year. We need an independent and highly motivated team member who is well organized, a self starter, and passionate about developing something truly incredible.

Duties will include, but not be limited to:

  • planning finances and production to maintain farm progress against budget parameters, as well as record keeping of agricultural production;

  • designing a growing strategy in accordance with both the practical needs of the entire property (including the restaurant, B&B and private residences within) and the philosophy according to which the property operates;

  • purchasing and curating supplies such as seeds and fertilizer, along with the maintenance and cataloguing of equipment and supplies;

  • supervising small scale beehives and beekeeping project on the farm, as well as monitoring and harvesting honey production;

  • planning activities for trainee staff, volunteers and interns who visit the farm, and participating in mentoring and monitoring staff;

  • maintaining and monitoring the quality of yield, as well as understanding the implications of the weather and making contingency plans;

  • growing products for deadlines such as markets, direct sales and on-site use;

  • transporting produce to markets or preparing produce for direct sales;

  • maintaining a knowledge of pests and diseases and an understanding of how they spread and how to treat them;

  • maintaining the water and irrigation system through both daily monitoring as well as periodic and seasonal repairs and improvements;

  • operating tractors or other heavy machinery, and assisting other members of the farm when needed;

  • maintaining the lawn and garden around the guest services area (the restaurant and B&B)

Desired Skills and Experience

This is a position that requires both physical strength and intellectual fortitude, as much of the work will be expected to be performed independently. From March through November, there will hardly seem to be enough hours in the day to get everything done! In addition, candidates must understand that we do not use any chemicals on the farm whatsoever, and we try in every possible way to maintain a zero-waste property.

We ask that candidates have:

  • Experience and a strong background in organic farming with an emphasis on regenerative agricultural techniques. Certification or a degree in these fields is not required, but is a plus.

  • Ability to perform demanding physical labour and to operate heavy machinery

  • Authorization to work legally in the European Union

  • A valid Driver’s License

  • The common language on the farm is English, making it a requirement for candidates. However as the farm is located in Italy we strongly encourage and prefer applicants with Italian language skills. Additional languages are a plus.

Salary and Compensation

The position includes housing on the property in a furnished cabin that will occasionally share a kitchen with visiting volunteers or interns but affords a great deal of privacy and personal space. The manager will also receive a monthly stipend of 500 euro, as well as use of a farm vehicle.

When the garden is able to grow and produce a yield that can be sold, the manager will collect a percentage of these sales in accordance to an agreement with the farm owners, as a supplement to his or her monthly stipend.

The manager will be employed on a yearly contractual basis, which may be renewed following satisfactory yields in the garden and agreement between the manager and the farm owners.

This position is only available to candidates who are legally authorized to work in the European Union, as Casa Caponetti is unable to sponsor work visas for non-EU citizens or residents.

To apply for this position, please send a current CV, along with a cover letter detailing your experience as well as your vision for a project of this kind, to nonprofit@casacaponetti.com
